StackBlitz is a seven-year overnight success. For years the company built WebContainers, a proprietary browser-based runtime that lets developers run full-stack apps instantly, but monetization stalled and by late 2023 StackBlitz was on the brink of shutting down. The breakthrough came in mid-2024 when the team layered Anthropic’s Claude model on top of WebContainers and launched Bolt.new, an AI agent that could generate, edit, and deploy apps from a simple prompt. The product was intentionally frictionless: no login, no credit card, just a single prompt box. Virality followed, with users sharing what they built and creating a powerful growth loop.

The results were extraordinary. Bolt hit $4M ARR in its first 30 days, $20M ARR in two months, and $40M ARR within five months, while amassing more than 5 million users and adding over 1 million new signups each month. Bolt makes app creation accessible to anyone, not just developers, while WebContainers provides the defensible edge in speed, cost, and developer experience. After raising $105M at a $700M valuation, StackBlitz is positioned to democratize software creation and capture not only the $10–20B developer tools market but also a slice of the $500B+ professional services market.
