The robotics industry has long pursued the holy grail of a general-purpose “brain” that can reason, plan, and act across tasks, environments, and hardware. Historically, the barrier was data scarcity and brittle, task-specific programming. With the rise of large-scale vision-language-action models, that barrier is finally breaking. Skild AI, founded by CMU professors and world-renowned roboticists Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta, is leading this new frontier with the ambition to create a general robotics foundation model. The implications are massive: 85% of warehouses still lack automation, and millions of industrial, healthcare, and construction jobs face labor shortages or safety risks. If Skild succeeds, it will enable low-cost robots to perform dexterous, safe, and adaptable work across industries, reshaping the $15T global physical economy.
