Physical Intelligence (PI) is attempting to do for robotics what OpenAI did for language, build a general-purpose foundation model that can adapt to countless real-world tasks. Today, most robots are brittle point solutions, hard-coded for narrow use cases like vacuuming or picking items from a warehouse shelf. PI’s approach, led by Google Robotics veteran Karol Hausman with cofounders Sergey Levine, Chelsea Finn, Brian Ichter, and Quan Vuong, is to train a universal model, π0, on multimodal sensorimotor data collected across diverse robots and tasks. Early demonstrations already show robots folding laundry, unloading dryers, cleaning tables, and handling groceries without bespoke programming. This “GPT-1 moment for robotics” suggests a path to machines that can generalize across unstructured environments, the central challenge in bringing robots into homes, factories, and beyond.

The scale of conviction is extraordinary. Physical Intelligence raised $400 million in 2025 at a $2 billion valuation, led by Jeff Bezos, Thrive Capital, Lux, OpenAI, Redpoint, and Bond. That capital is fueling rapid data collection, simulation, and model training aimed at producing the first broadly capable robotics AI. The company’s thesis is that a universal control system, once cracked, becomes a platform for every form factor, from humanoids to simple robotic arms, creating an addressable market spanning trillions of dollars across household automation, logistics, and manufacturing. With a founding team that includes pioneers of robot learning, enormous funding from the strongest AI and robotics backers, and early technical results proving generalization is possible, Physical Intelligence is positioned to become the defining foundation model company for the physical world.
