About Modal Labs
Modal is building the serverless compute platform to support the next generation of AI companies. In order to deliver the developer experience we wanted, we went deep and built our own infrastructure—including our own custom file system, container runtime, scheduler, container image builder, and much more.
We're a small team based out of New York, Stockholm and San Francisco. In just one year, we've reached 8-figure revenue, tripled our headcount, scaled to support thousands of GPUs, and raised over $32M in funding.
Working at Modal means joining one of the fastest-growing AI infrastructure organizations at an early stage, with many opportunities to grow within the company. Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g. Seaborn, Luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.
Why It's a Rocketship
Why It's a Rocketship
Modal is building the leading serverless GPU platform, enabling developers to run AI and data workloads without the complexity of managing infrastructure. Whereas hyperscalers offer raw instances and Docker-based container orchestration with long cold starts and steep learning curves, Modal has built a custom runtime, filesystem, job scheduler, and image builder from the ground up. This design delivers faster scale-up times, lower costs, and a dramatically better developer experience. Modal’s “functions-as-a-service” paradigm for GPU workloads lets teams deploy LLM inference, generative image and audio models, 3D asset pipelines, or even simulations with a few lines of code, paying only for active compute. By compressing development loops from minutes to seconds, Modal is unlocking both accessibility for smaller teams and significant productivity gains for enterprises that would otherwise need to stitch together a dozen cloud services.
The company’s traction is already proving the depth of demand. Since launching publicly in late 2022, Modal has grown revenue more than 50x in a year to reach an eight-figure run rate. Its customer base includes Ramp, Scale, Suno, Cursor, Substack, and other high-profile AI-first companies. Co-founders Erik Bernhardsson, who built Spotify’s early recommendation systems and scaled engineering at Better.com, and Akshat Bubna, formerly at Scale AI and an IOI gold medalist, bring a rare blend of deep infra expertise and AI-native product intuition. With a world-class engineering team and momentum in generative AI use cases, Modal is positioned to become the default serverless GPU layer for the AI era, potentially displacing parts of AWS and GCP’s stack while catalyzing a new wave of AI-native applications.
