EvolutionaryScale’s mission is to develop artificial intelligence to understand biology for the benefit of human health and society, through open, safe, and responsible research, and in partnership with the scientific community. Over the next ten years AI will transform biological design, making molecules and entire cells programmable. We will develop the foundation models for biology that enable this.

EvolutionaryScale is building the first frontier-scale AI model for biology, with the goal of making protein engineering programmable. Its flagship model, ESM3, is trained to reason jointly over protein sequence, structure, and function, enabling scientists to design entirely new proteins for applications in drug discovery, materials science, and environmental remediation. Spun out of Meta’s FAIR lab by researchers who helped build the original AlphaFold alternatives, EvolutionaryScale recently raised a $142 million seed round from Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Lux Capital, Amazon, and Nvidia to commercialize this next-generation biological model.

The company’s core bet is that biology is at the same inflection point that natural language was in 2018—and that scaling transformer models on biological data will unlock new, emergent capabilities. ESM3 has already demonstrated early promise, including generating a new functional variant of green fluorescent protein (esmGFP), and will soon be available through AWS and Nvidia’s enterprise stacks. While commercial use cases remain speculative and the product roadmap spans a decade, EvolutionaryScale is positioning itself as the foundational infrastructure for programmable biology.

The ambition is significant, and so is the risk. The model is compute-intensive, the commercialization path is long, and competition from players like DeepMind’s Isomorphic Labs, Insitro, and Recursion is growing. But if large biological models follow the scaling curves of language models, EvolutionaryScale has the talent, funding, and head start to be a central player in what could become the next trillion-dollar vertical for generative AI.
