About Cognition
We are an applied AI lab building end-to-end software agents.
We’re the makers of Devin, the first AI software engineer. Cognition is building collaborative AI teammates that enable engineers to focus on more interesting problems and empower engineering teams to strive for more ambitious goals.
Our team is small and talent-dense. Among our founding team, we have world-class competitive programmers, former founders, and leaders from companies at the cutting edge of AI including Scale AI, Cursor, Waymo, Tesla, Lunchclub, Modal, Google DeepMind, and Nuro.
Building Devin is just the first step—our hardest challenges still lie ahead. If you’re excited to solve some of the world’s biggest problems and build AI that can reason on real-world tasks, apply to join us.
Why It's a Rocketship
Why It's a Rocketship
Cognition became one of the most talked-about AI startups in Silicon Valley almost overnight. Its flagship product, Devin, was introduced as the “first AI software engineer,” capable of independently completing real-world development tasks including debugging, building applications, and even fine-tuning models. The launch went viral, attracting wide media coverage and industry debate, and led to an extraordinary financing pace: a $21 million Series A followed by a $175 million Series B just weeks later, at a $2 billion valuation. The founding team, led by Scott Wu, includes some of the most technically gifted builders in AI infrastructure, and the company has attracted top-tier backers including Founders Fund.
While Devin generated massive awareness, actual product usage and revenue remain limited. The company overindexed on engineering talent and underinvested in sales and marketing. That imbalance became more evident as enterprise buyers explored Devin and adjacent solutions, often struggling to understand where Devin fits in a production development workflow. Recognizing this gap, Cognition moved quickly to acquire Windsurf, a well-regarded startup with a strong go-to-market engine, proven enterprise traction, and a complementary agent product for asynchronous workflows. Windsurf had built a real commercial foundation, including a seasoned GTM team and ongoing contracts with large customers.
The combination of Cognition and Windsurf brings together two critical components: deep technical capability and a functioning distribution motion. Together, they can begin to construct a more complete product stack across real-time and asynchronous AI agents, and support a broader set of developer and enterprise use cases. If the team can translate its engineering velocity into sustained adoption and operational focus, Cognition has the potential to move from viral brand to enduring platform.
