Cluely began as a polarizing experiment in applied AI. Founder Roy Lee, then a student at Columbia, built a tool to help software engineers cheat on technical interviews by using AI to suggest answers in real time. After the project went viral and led to his suspension from Columbia, Lee turned the prototype into a standalone desktop assistant. The product now discreetly analyzes users’ screens and audio to deliver live suggestions, notes, and contextual prompts during meetings, interviews, or sales calls. While early reactions were mixed, Cluely's value proposition was clear: real-time intelligence delivered in context, without waiting until after the call.
Since launch, the company has turned controversy into momentum. Cluely is now generating $7 million in ARR, with adoption from both individual users and enterprise teams. Its go-to-market engine is unusually advanced for a company at this stage.
