Safe Superintelligence (SSI) is one of the most ambitious and concentrated bets in the history of AI, founded by Ilya Sutskever, the former OpenAI Chief Scientist and one of the most accomplished researchers in deep learning. While most AI labs balance commercialization and research, SSI is uniquely focused on a single problem: building and deploying superintelligent AI safely. Starting with only 10 employees and no public product, SSI raised over $1 billion at a $5 billion valuation in 2024, backed by a syndicate including a16z, Sequoia, NFDG, and SV Angel. Within a year, the company doubled its headcount to ~20 employees, secured another $1 billion including $500 million from Greenoaks, and saw its valuation soar to $30 billion.
