The market for AI coding assistants is increasingly crowded, but few tools have shown staying power in professional workflows. Cursor stands out by going deeper than a chat overlay or autocomplete plugin. The team forked VS Code, the most widely used editor globally, and customized core elements of the experience around LLM-native development. The result is a seamless interface where AI can suggest edits across multiple files, refactor in natural language, and respond contextually to questions about the codebase, all within a familiar developer environment.

That focus on workflow is translating into real traction. Cursor grew from $1 million to $300 million in ARR in April 2025 in just over two years. Paying customers include OpenAI, Midjourney, Perplexity, Shopify, and other highly technical teams. What’s most notable is retention. Developers who adopt Cursor tend to stick with it, which is uncommon in a category with high experimentation and low switching costs. The team has been disciplined in their approach, choosing not to train foundation models but instead focusing on performance, iteration speed, and integration quality. Cursor is quickly becoming the interface of choice for AI-assisted software development.
